Common questions

Why does paying the minimum barely reduce my credit card balance?
Because the minimum is only about 5% of your balance, and interest of up to 1.5% a month is taken out of that payment first. On a RM12,000 balance, a RM600 minimum includes roughly RM180 of interest, so only about RM420 actually reduces the debt. The minimum also shrinks as the balance shrinks, so each month even less goes toward clearing it, which is how one balance can take well over a decade to pay off.
Is it better to pay a fixed amount or the minimum on a credit card?
A fixed amount is far better. In the first month a fixed payment and the minimum can be identical, say RM600 on a RM12,000 balance. But if you keep paying RM600 every month instead of letting it shrink, more of each payment lands on the debt as the interest falls. That one habit can turn a decade of minimum payments into a payoff of under two years, with thousands of ringgit less interest.
Does using the card again cancel out my payments?
Yes, this is the re-swiping trap. If you pay RM600 off and then put petrol, groceries, and a dinner back on the same card, the balance stands still because you refill it as fast as you empty it. Extra payments only work once you stop using the card for new spending. If freezing the card feels impossible, it usually means the card is quietly covering a gap in your monthly budget, and that gap is the real thing to fix.
How much interest can a credit card charge in Malaysia?
Bank Negara Malaysia caps credit card interest at 18% a year, which works out to roughly 1.5% added to your balance every month, and it sets the minimum payment at 5% of the balance. Those two numbers together are why paying only the minimum keeps you in debt for years and hands the bank thousands of ringgit in interest.
